Situated just a few minutes’ walk from the center of Kawayu Hot Springs, Kawayu Rock Terrace is a symbolic representation of the nearby Mt. Io and the Kawayu resort. The magnificent sight of billowing steam rising from the very same bedrock that stretches to the volcano is a powerful image. Observing closely, you will see many square shaped vents gushing highly acidic sulfur steam into the clear, cold night sky. Witness the real origins and thermal power of a Japanese onsen before heading to dinner and a relaxing hot spring bath.

Get to know the local history and culture

A fitting conclusion to your tour is at the Teshikaga Hometown History Museum, Furusato Rekishi-kan. This fascinating museum can be found on the first floor of the Mashu Tourism and Cultural Center. The collection is also home to an exhibition of artefacts collected and donated by Sakai Taneichi, a celebrated local official, and a literary museum dedicated to one of Teshikaga’s most famous sons, the writer and poet Genzo Sarashina. The resident curators will happily discourse over various exhibits to give a finer understanding of the region’s culture and history, providing a vivid and moving memory to take away with you.
